Reggae Pioneer Sugar Minott Dies at 54

Sugar Minott, a smooth-voiced singer and producer who helped to popularize reggae music, has died. He was 54. Minott (MY'-naht) died Saturday at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica's capital, Kingston, his wife Maxine Stowe said Sunday. She did not disclose the cause of death. Two months ago, Minott had canceled performances in Canada after suffering chest pains. Born in Kingston in May 1956, the singer, whose real name was Lincoln Barrington Minott, launched his musical career as a youngster in the late 1960s as a member of the African Brothers reggae trio. He started a successful solo career in the 1970s, gaining a following in Jamaica's dancehalls with songs like "Vanity" and "Mr. DC" while recording for the famed Studio One, the Caribbean island's first black-owned music studio. In 1981, he had his biggest hit with a cover of the Jackson Five's "Good Thing Going," which reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom's singles chart in March of that year. Minott was known for nurturing young talent with his own Black Roots record label and Youthman Promotion company. Reggae and dancehall artists such as Junior Reid and Tenor Saw began their careers under his tutelage. "Sugar Minott was a man who gave a lot of strength to the music although he got no love from the business," Reid said. A new Album from Minott, "New Day," is scheduled to be released in coming weeks. Stowe said funeral arrangements had not yet been made.

Portmore, Jamaica - One of Dancehalls most successful DJ's; Vybz Kartel is expected to turn himself into the St. Catherine South police today after being named as a person of major interest in financing gang activity. The police have named more than 100 persons of interest since Bruce Golding declared the country in a state of emergency. "I, like millions of other Jamaicans, have certain concerns about the violation of my civil rights and liberties during this State of Emergency, however, I will grant the police an audience this morning as they have declared me a "major person of interest", and placed my name on a list populated by alleged criminals." "This is not the first time that the police force has attempted to smear my reputation based on undeveloped assumptions and ridiculous rumors, but as it happened then, I know I will be exonerated once again. I have nothing to fear. Fear makes men believe the worst, but I believe in our justice system, however flawed it may be, and remain confident that the security will act with professionalism in this matter." "I have engaged legal counsel in this matter, and the truth will prevail. I know I will be exonerated." Although, Kartel has had a challenging year with artists and the police closing down his studio in the neighborhood of Havendale he still continues to be one of dancehall's top selling artists in the US, France, and England.

VP New Album Introducing Romain Virgo

Over the last couple of years or so, Romain Virgo's is a name which has risen from ultimate obscurity and the unknown to being one of the most promising young singers around. The former winner of The Digicel Rising Stars television program in Jamaica, Virgo has proven himself a bonafide hitmaker and in doing so has made his one of the most anticipated of debut albums in Reggae music recent history. Thus, it was to virtually no one's surprise that the St. Ann born singer linked up with the industry leading VP Records to make his presence known.

The label now brings forth Romain Virgo's self titled full length release after pushing a digital EP ("Introducing Romain Virgo") earlier this year.
